Boat programs and private boat hire in Budapest

Allow us to share with you the history of the Danube in a nutshell. The second longest river of Europe (after the Volga) flows across 10 countries forming also national border at certain sections. The present capital of Hungary, Budapest is situated on the two banks of the Danube River. Celtic tribes inhabited this area from the 5th Century BC. Later the Roman Empire stretched out the boundary to this place and used the river as a natural border and Pannonia, the Roman province was founded. It was very popular to visit Aquincum, the provincial capital which had a military and civilian town with a population of 20 thousand. Tourists can find remains of 2 amphitheatres, a military bath house and also the “Forum Romanum”, beside many other antique ruins in the Aquincum Museum. After the 5th Century different tribes and folks lived here, all taking advantage of the river as it delivered all needful to survive: fish and protection of enemy that mostly came from the East. The Hungarians also called Magyars settled down in the Carpathian Basin around the end of 9th Century and established the Land of Magyars, Hungary. The Danube still played a very important role as a natural protection from eastern invaders, such as the Mongols and the Ottoman Turks. All different peoples wanted to occupy this territory so abundant in water resources, lying in the centre of trade routes between North and South Europe.

The Danube always played an important role, and the present inhabitants are proud of Budapest because of the incomparable situation: on the flat eastern side lies Pest, on the hilly western side lies Buda, each offering a wonderful sight of the other side. The Danube has an average width of 400 meters (~1300 feet) and 4 meter depth (14 feet) in Budapest. Many major historical attraction are situated along the shore, such as the Parliament, the caste district with sights such as Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, the former Royal Palace, the caste garden, Gellért Bath, Universities, the Corso Promenade, the Inner-city Parish Church, the oldest church of Pest, the modern Whale entertainment centre, the National Theatre, the Palace of Arts, the magnificent Bridges, and many more beautiful sights that are illuminated and lit in the night.
